Julius Baer Generation Cup after round nr 12 - Magnus Carlsen on the lead

The   Julius Baer Generation Cup  is the 7th of 9 events on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place on chess24 from September 18-25.  The 16-player field will be cut in half by the 4-day round-robin Prelims. The total prize fund is $150,000, with $750 for a win and $250 for a draw in the Prelims.  The quarterfinals and semi-finals are 1-day, 4-game matches, while the final will feature two such matches over two days. The players have 15 minutes for all their moves, plus a 10-second increment starting from move 1. In the Prelims there are 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.  If a tiebreak is required the players will play two 5+3 games and then, if needed, a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black.  No draw offers are allowed before move 40.  Official website

Novy Bor Chess Club wins European Club Cup

Novy Bor secured the long-awaited title win in the final round of the European Club Cup in Mayrhofen with a 3.5:2.5 against Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier. It is the second championship for the Czech team after 2013. In today’s match Pentala Harikrishna lays the foundation for success with a white win against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. On the neighboring board Vidid loses to Esipenko after six wins in a row, but boards three to five end in draws. David Anton Guijarro secures the match victory and title with a win against Matthieu. Taking the individual points for the European title are: Harikrishna 4,5/7, Vidit 6/7, Wojtaszek 3/6, Navara, 4/6, Nguayen 1,5/2, Grandelius 4,5/6 and Anton Guijarro 4,5/5 . U.S. Chess Championship after round 5

The 2022 U.S. Championship is a 14-player round-robin featuring the strongest players in the USA, who compete for $262,000 in prize money as well as the coveted title of U.S. Champion.  If two or more players tie for first place a playoff will be held. Players receive 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The renowned Chess Festival in Guernsey is celebrating its 48th edition. During the second round match between Norbert Krueger and Keith Arkell, the latter employed the Caro-Kann Defense. The game evolved to a position where White opted for a knight sacrifice on f7, which Black captured with another knight. Following 15.Qh5, Black played Nge7, gaining a significant advantage. An intriguing alternative would have been for White to continue the sacrificial strategy by playing Wxf7 instead of 15.Qh5, and after Kxf7, playing 16.Qh5.
