Magnus Carlsen will not defend his World Champion title


Magnus Carlsen, the 5-time World Chess Champion, today ended months of speculation by announcing via his sponsor Unibet that he will not defend his title.

The game evolved to a position where White opted for a knight sacrifice on f7, which Black captured with another knight. Following 15.Qh5, Black played Nge7, gaining a significant advantage. An intriguing alternative would have been for White to continue the sacrificial strategy by playing Wxf7 instead of 15.Qh5, and after Kxf7, playing 16.Qh5.
